The Life of the Saxophone

I am a conical-bored musical instrument and am considered a member of the woodwind family. I am usually made of brass and I am played with a single- reed mouthpiece. My cousin is the clarinet. I was invented in the 1840’s by Adolphe Sax. My main purpose was to perform in the military bands, but later I gravitated to jazz. Hello, I am the saxophone.

Adolphe Sax was a musical instrument designer and a musician. He played the clarinet, but he is best known for inventing the saxophone. He inherited his passion for designing musical instruments from his father. Sax started designing instruments at an early age in life. The saxophone was intended to form a tonal link between a clarinets and brass instruments. Although he did not end his career successfully, he made a major contribution for future musicians.

The saxophone consists of three different sizes. The alto saxophone is the average size of the saxophones, and it is most commonly used for classical compositions. Because of its prevalence, the alto saxophone is the common choice for beginners.

The simplest design of saxophone is  the soprano saxophone. It is shaped like a straight conical tube. The soprano sax penetrates a high pitch sound. It is the smallest of the three saxophones. A more experience saxophonist will play the soprano sax because of alternate fingerings or vary breathing. It sometimes can be used as a substitute for an oboe.

The tenor is the second most commonly used saxophone. It uses a larger mouthpiece, reed, and ligature compared to the alto. The tenor sax is played in many different ensembles such as, concert bands, marching bands, big bands jazz ensembles, and symphony orchestras. The tenor sax is made similar to the soprano sax, but with a different sound.

Music lovers can appreciate the sound behind the voice of the singer or rapper. It would be hard to dissect the different instruments in the music. But a lot of the instruments are coherent such as the piano, drums, and the sax. If I was to play an instrument it would be the saxophone. The sound it produces is gratifying. I know a plethora of people who knows how to play the piano, drums or guitar, but not the saxophone.

Jazz was a new sound in America and it needed instruments to help compliment it. Among those instruments was the saxophone. The sax was altered many times before it produced the sound that satisfied all that heard. The sax has been effectively used in jazz bands and popular dance orchestras. Its smooth and sensual sound helped renovate the minds and souls of individuals.

Whatever your favorite instrument might be just know behind every instrument there is a rich history that helped shape music today. Yeah, the saxophone started off as a military instrument, but later it became a jazz instrument. Jazz led to Blues. Blues led to Rhythm and Blues. Rhythm and Blues led to Rap. Therefore there is a direct correlation between the purpose of music instruments and music it self.

the beginning was very strong , I liked how u started off as if you were the sax , but then you changed and started speaking in first person which was a bit confusing. The blog did however sound articulate. I was a little bit lost after the fourth paragraph because it seemed as if the content changed form being abou the sax and Harlem Rennaisance and more on how we as individuals feel about and respect that era in time.

Great entry but at some points in your blog, your item becomes confusing. I knew it was the sax at first, but then it seemed to have changed to jazz and then the Harlem Renaissance. Also I think you should switch paragraph 4 and 5 to put history with history. And I found “when they were not been heard loud enough.” But otherwise, I liked your info and you have a nice way of writing.

And also,, :-) .. could it be possible that you put the last two paragraphs together?

Visual: The blog has short paragraphs which makes the entry easy to read. There were no photos but I would have like to have been able to associate the description with a photo. The blog had consistent style and font. Even though the entry is long, the short paragraphs are reasonable enough to read the entire thing.
Tone/Voice: The voice is clear. It respects the reader but the entire entry consists of simple sentences. I would have liked to have seen some complexity in the sentence structure. It assumes the history mentioned in the entry is common sense to the reader but not everyone is familiar with the Harlem Renaissance. The voice is consistent.
Initial Hook: The first paragraph was very good. It tells what the entry was about and makes the reader want to read more.
Organization: Some info seems like it is out of order.
1. description; history; intro
2. history; effects of listening to the sax
3. importance of the sax in the Harlem Renaissance
4. how the writer feels about the item
5. more on the Harlem Renaissance; the ways African Americans could embrace their culture; affects today
6. how the writer feels about individuals and their history
7. what he wants the reader to take away
8. why the blog was created
Main Point: how the sax has changed history
Transition: Most paragraphs had a good transition but rearrangement of paragraph 4 and 5 would have been better because it would put history with history instead of a break between it. Also it would have been better if the writer had incorporated the last two paragraphs together.
Word Choice: Good word choice.
Grammar/Spelling: Needs to fix “when they were not been heard loud enough.” But otherwise the blog looks carefully written.
Others: The writer strayed of the topic. First it was the sax, then I picked up that it change to jazz, and then to the Harlem Renaissance.

visually your blog wasn’t intimidating and was consistent in terms of font and style.

The tone was friendly and informative not talking down to me and consistent through the blog after the first paragraph.

the hook was ok. I like how you made personified the sax, it was something different, but it doesn’t connect with the tone of the rest of the blog.

the organization seems fine except i don’t think the third to last paragraph is necessary.

Word choice is varied and good

The only grammar problem was “not been heard loud enough”

very passionate and interesting blog!

the blog is a little lon, but the short spaced out paragraphs allows the blog to look shorter, which is good. in one section, it seems like you talked down to blacks and was being a little harsh. it was like you was calling all blacks ignorant, so you should change your wording in that area so that u still get your opinion out. wen i first read the blog, i thought the blog was going to be about a sax. the into was good, but you should give more info about the topic, so the readers will kno the blog is more about jazz music, the renaissance, or the sax..(whichever is the manin idea)
